MYOS (Fortetropin)
Why I recommend it
I started using MYOS for my horse and my dog this past winter, when “Icemageddon” made it nearly impossible for either of them to get much exercise. Both are in their golden years, so maintaining muscle mass is especially important to me. I tried MYOS—and I loved it for both of them. It’s now one of the products I recommend for senior dogs, cats, and horses when maintaining muscle and strength is a priority.

MultiFlex
Why I recommend it
MultiFlex is a “Dog is Human” product. I haven't needed to use it with my own dog yet (although I have it in my back pocket should he need it!). What caught my attention was the combination of ingredients—from Boswellia and UC-II collagen to MSM—all of which can help support joint comfort and mobility in senior dogs.
It also pairs nicely with BioCell (and I'm sure you know how I feel about BioCell! If not, you can find out more about it here).
I currently have several patients using MultiFlex, and so far, the feedback has been very positive.

Nordic Naturals Omega-3
Why I recommend it
Omega-3 fatty acids are one of those supplements that can benefit so many areas of the body—from joint and skin health to supporting the heart, kidneys, brain, and eyes.
The catch? It’s fish oil. And I’m picky about fish oil. I want to know where the fish comes from, how the oil is processed, and that it’s been tested for contaminants such as heavy metals.
That’s why I like Nordic Naturals. They have high standards for sourcing, purity, and testing, and they make veterinary-specific formulations that make dosing easier. When I recommend an omega-3 supplement for my patients, this is one of the brands I trust.

Healthy Aging & Wellness
MCT Oil
I've personally been using MCT oil for a while—I cook and bake with it regularly. But recently I learned more about its potential benefits for dogs, especially when it comes to brain health.
MCTs provide an alternative source of energy for the brain, which is particularly interesting for senior dogs experiencing age-related cognitive changes. There is also some intriguing research into MCTs and certain neurologic conditions.
That's why I've started giving MCT oil to Tar. As he gets older, I'm always looking for simple ways to support his brain health and healthy aging.

Proviable (Probiotic)
Why I recommend it
There are a TON of probiotics on the market these days. It seems like everyone has a probiotic for dogs or cats. So how do you know which one to choose?
Personally, I use kefir for myself and Tar—sometimes homemade, but usually the organic kind I find at the grocery store between the milk and yogurt.
But if you're looking for something convenient that you can simply sprinkle on your dog's or cat's food, I recommend Proviable from Nutramax.
Nutramax is a company I trust. They don't try to make everything under the sun. They make a relatively focused line of veterinary products, they stand behind them, and I've had very good experiences with their customer service.

Skin, Ears & Coat
Zymox Otic
Why I recommend it
Itchy, smelly ears usually result in a vet visit—and your dog may come home with ear cleaner, ear drops, and sometimes additional medications. Then you have to actually get all of that into the ear!
Let me tell you, cleaning a sore dog's ear is not as easy as it sounds. Squirt an ear cleaner into an already irritated ear and your dog may give you the stink eye before trotting off and shaking his head like it's going to fall off. Then you have to catch him again to apply medication inside the ear canal. And repeat the process? Good luck!
For appropriate cases, I like ZYMOX Otic because its enzyme-based formula is designed to be used without pre-cleaning the ear. You simply apply it to the ear canal and gently massage the base of the ear. That's a whole lot easier on both the dog and the person trying to treat him!
Of course, painful, severely inflamed, recurrent, or persistent ear problems still need a veterinary exam. But for the right situation, ZYMOX is one of those products I'm very happy to have on hand.
